Normandy Packing List That Covers All the Essentials
If you’re headed to northern France soon, you’re probably looking for a Normandy packing list.
Most French packing lists center around Paris, the country’s number one tourist attraction. But what should you fill your suitcase with when you’re headed beyond the sprawling metro area into rural France? (Hint, you can probably leave the beret and striped shirt at home unless they really spark joy for you.)
Normandy is a fairly popular tourist destination, especially since it has deep World War II connections for many Americans. Known for blustery sea breezes and rainstorms mixed with stunningly sunny bluebird days, Normandy is a corner of the world where you need lots of layers, a rainjacket, and sunscreen, no matter what time of year you visit.
As I prepared for my November 2024 road trip, I consulted both my Azores and Milan packing lists to ensure I packed items suited for both scrambling up seaside cliffs and exploring city centers. I actually think I did a pretty good job of packing for my first trip to Normandy, although I do have one major regret I’ll share later in this post.

What to Pack for an Autumn Trip to Normandy
Layers are definitely your friend in Normandy and you absolutely, no question about it, are going to need a rain jacket. Quick dry, wicking fabrics are also a good idea and life will be a lot more comfortable if you pack some waterproof shoes. Don’t forget at least one dress for nice dinners out.

Checked luggage – No question about it, my medium 27″ tall Victorinox Roller Bag is a lot of suitcase. In fact, it has so much space that Andy and I shared it for our entire two week trip. This suitcase was pretty packed, which didn’t leave us with much room for souvenirs. In hindsight, I would have preferred
Carry-on – I love using my H.A.W.G Mil Spec Backpack as my carry-on. It fits my laptop, a change of clothes, and all the other essentials you want close at hand during a flight. During the trip, it worked great for hikes and other adventures.
Personal item– My convertible Pacsafe Backpack is one of my favorite travel purchases ever and it’s still going strong years after the trip to Savannah I originally purchased it for. I used it as a crossbody bag on the plane, then converted it to backpack for exploring Normandy’s favorite towns and cities.
Normandy Clothing Must-Haves For A Spring or Autumn Visit

Cotapaxi Fleece – My pullover fleece worked both for a cozy plane outfit and as a very welcome top layer for blustery walks along the English Channel or through World War I battlefields.
First Lite Wool Pants – My First Lite Obsidian lightweight wool pants worked so well on my Azores trip that I brought them on another transatlantic trip. Since I knew our trip itinerary would involves of outdoor exploring in sometimes cold, damp autumn weather, I knew they would be perfect for keeping me warm and would dry quickly.
Winter Hat – November high temperatures in Normandy usually hang out in the low 50s. While that’s not terribly chilly, I was very happy to keep a lightweight stocking cap in my jacket pocket for chilly moments and also to keep my hair in line on windy cliff tops.

Casual Knit Dress – While our time in Normandy was mostly spent outside exploring the dramatic landscapes, I was happy to have a ThredUp dress that I originally bought for my New England trip for nice dinners out and urban exploring.
Cashmere Sweater – I love cashmere sweaters for European travel because they don’t take up much space in the suitcase and are incredibly warm. I could also layer it over my knit dress to turn the dress into a skirt and create a second outfit.
Down Jacket – I normally recommend a wool coat with buttons for European travels, but I simply didn’t have room in my shared suitcase and ended up taking my packable Cotapaxi Fuego down jacket.
From a function standpoint, this jacket was fantastic – I was warm and dry the entire trip. The issue? It’s way too colorful for the European fashion landscape and might as well have asked “Parlez-vous anglais?” for me. While I highly recommend this jacket, if you want to blend it, order it in a dark solid color.
Clothes I Packed for 10 Days in Normandy
Rain jacket – It was chilly enough in Normandy that I always wore my down jacket when we were outside, but I was very happy to have a lightweight rain jacket when we experienced a bonafide rainy day in Paris.
Wool sweater – A pullover wool sweater was attractive enough for nice dinners out and also an extremely functional top layer for our outdoor Normandy adventures.
Vest – After how helpful my simple quilted vest was in Milan, I was sure to bring it to France to add a pop of color and warmth to any outfit. It’s definitely a capsule (suitcase?) wardrobe staple!
Wool T-shirt – The weather was cool enough that I was always wearing layers of clothing, but I was happy to have one wool t-shirt as a base layer for on the plane and once we were settled into our rentals each night.
2 long sleeve shirts – I’m always claiming that these Minus 33 midweight crew tops are the perfect base layer, but that’s because they work just as well in Alaska as they do in Normandy.
Jeans – A pair of jeans were great for museum days.
Lightweight active pants – The straight leg lightweight activewear pants were great for planes and hiking.
Sunglasses – While it does rain approximately 10-15 days of November in northern France, we had a couple of incredibly sunny days. You’ll want a pair of sunglasses within easy reach during your Normandy travels, especially if you’re planning to drive.
Swimsuit – While it will likely be too chilly to take a dip in the sea during a shoulder season visit to Normandy, it’s a good thing to pack just in case your hotel has a pool or you decide to go to the spa during your visit.
Underwear 1x number of days. I’m a fan of wool underwear.
Socks– 1 x number of days. I packed a variety of Darn Tough.
Tights –
Bras x 2
Pajamas – I’m a big fan to LAKE pajamas, but I just went the old t-shirt and pajama shorts route this time to save room in my carry-on.
Best Shoes For Normandy Spring and Autumn

Black boots – We joked that Paris women have an unspoken uniform of ankle height black boots, dark tights, and mid-length skirts. While I didn’t wear these much when we were out in the northern French countryside, they were perfect for Paris and Rouen. The fact that they’re waterproof is clutch for November travels!
Waterproof Sneakers – After failing to pack waterproof shoes for the Azores, I wasn’t making that mistake again in Normandy! My Teva sneakers were up to the challenge of 20K step days on cobblestone streets or mucky hiking trails. I also like that they’re dark and don’t have a visible logo.
Normandy Toiletries
Pharmacy bag – No one want to spend their vacation under the weather, but if you do get sick, you probably don’t want to be stumbling around in a foreign country looking for over the counter drugs. Just in case, I like to pack a couple doses each of Ex-Lax, Immodium, Emergen C, NyQuil, Advil, and cough drops. I also highly recommend proactively taking a Gas-x before any flight longer than four hours.
First aid kit – Just some Band-aids and antiseptic cream, really.
Sunscreen – You never known when the sun’s going to shine in Normandy, so at the very least, pack some facial sunscreen.
Sleep kit – I think everyone needs a little sleep kit of an eye mask, ear plugs, melatonin, magnesium, and/or sleep gummies.
Toiletry kit – Nothing exciting in here: toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, razor, etc. etc. Don’t forget the travel packs of Kleenex!
Make-up bag – I often don’t bother with make-up when I travel (case in point: a week in USVI) but since we were spending time in Paris and other French cities, I did pack a small bag of mascara, eye shadow, and lip butter.

Plug adapters – Don’t forgot plug adapters for charging your phone and any other devices you brought along.
Nalgene Water Bottle – I don’t leave home without at least one Nalgene water bottle.
Wine Skins – Normandy might be the one region of France that doesn’t produce wine, but what they don’t do with wine, they make up for with cider and calvados! If you’re planning to bring a couple bottles home, these wine skins are the perfect way to transport those precious bottles. Hint: if you don’t seal the bottom of these bags, you’ll be able to use them for many, many trips. Mine have been going strong since Hawaii!
My Other Normandy Packing List Travel Accessories
Games – It’s always a good idea to have some small card games like Five Crowns and Phase 10 in your backpack in case of travel delays or just to unwind at the end of a busy day on your feet. Cribbage is Andy and my game of choice.
Wine Opener – Even if Normandy isn’t known for wine, it’s never a bad idea to have a small wine opener in your suitcase when you head to France!
Solar power bank – I always have a solar power bank handy in case my phone battery starts to dip while I’m out hiking or sightseeing.
Snack bag – Speaking of being on the go a lot, we all dipped into our snack bags on hikes, at the airport, and elsewhere. These granola bars are a must for any travel snack bag!
Laundry detergent – Since this was a longer trip, we did laundry twice. While almost every vacation rental with a washer and dryer also provides laundry supplies, I always like to bring a teeny container of laundry detergent powder since I prefer unscented soap. These laundry detergent sheets would work perfectly! It’s nice to have a couple dryer sheets also.
Trash bags and Ziplocs – I always like to have at least one trash bag and a handful of Ziplocs in the suitcase. They don’t take up much space and can be lifesavers when it comes to dealing with muddy shoes or transporting half-finished snacks.
Wet Bag – This wet bag is my favorite USVI souvenir. I used it as a laundry bag on this trip.

Since much of your Normandy vacation will likely be spent outside on hiking trails or at cemeteries or battlefields, it’s important to pack high quality, versatile pieces of clothing that can deal with the Normandy weather du jour, especially for off-season travel.
